It was a pretty horrible time in my life”. No one ever told her about how “it goes back decades, this misogyny and male dominated industry, it’s really toxic. The managers and the people in positions of power really abuse that too, not just me, but a lot of girls”. Despite her love of the sport, she “couldn’t continue with the abuse; it almost drove me to suicide, and I was lucky to get therapy and recover from it”.

Ellie Jean was empowered by the Me Too movement to speak out about the abuse that she suffered in her sport of surfing. “A lot of that kind of stuff is coming to light at the moment, and I’ve never really shared that before with anyone -only my close family and friends know it,” according to her. Confiding how “absolutely devastating the abuse that I had to face… so I’m just glad that I was able to come out of it stronger and better than ever, to be honest”. Surfing still remains a part of her life as she loves the sport and does it every chance she gets. The long term psychological effects and the trauma which she received from all of the abuse as a female surfer combined with another kind of abuse, the online abuse which she received from misinformation on social media was an additional weight.

Ellie Jean who is no stranger to scandal has recently found herself in the middle of what can be described as a “bizarre” International scandal. She stands accused of being an American tourist who defecated in a sacred lake in the Udaipur region of India, in October of 2025. Ellie Jean was confirmed to be in the video but the thing is, Ellie Jean has never once been to India. Instead, she was on a boat in the Australian Outback. To her Ellie Jean say it, “It was just a normal day and I had to go to the bathroom while we were cruising through the Kimberley,” she said referring to the boat trip that she was in with her sisters. The “incident” was actually that of Ellie Jean and her sisters on a boat in Lake Argyle, in the Kimberly region of Western Australia.
What was a natural post of Ellie Jean relieving herself, was taken from a different angle and spun into something that never happened. According to an article in The Times of India, Ellie Jean “posted a short Instagram video…showing her urinating off the side of a boat in Western Australia’s remote Kimberly region, with a crocodile swimming just meters away,” referring to the video that went viral with false claims that she was going to the bathroom in a sacred lake.
According to the article, “the confusion started when Coffey shared the clip with the caption, “A croc almost got me”. The misinformation came from an Indian Instagram account called ‘SwadesiOfficial,” when reposted the video with the wrong claims. To clarify, Ellie Jean intended the video to be funny and was during a “nine month boat trip from Tweed Heads to Brooke” which was filmed by a friend. Regaling people with tales of her adventures, about how she had to go quickly while keeping her eyes peeled for a 1.5 meter crocodile that was lurking nearby.

As per Ellie Jean, “we usually go in port or use a bucket, but this time we were far out”. She shared how “I would never disrespect any country like that”. She had reposted her video on Instagram to clarify, with the caption, “I’m setting the record straight. I’m Australian. This is the Aussie outback. IT WAS NOT IN INDIA”. Social media had essentially created another scandal with manufactured outrage, over something that never was. The speed with which a lie could be spread online and how it can be misconstrued is unbelievable. To clear the record once more, she stated how “I had to go to the bathroom-and it was only number one”. Ellie Jean was receiving hate mail, death threats with people calling for her deportation from a country that she had never been too.
Years later, Ellie Jean was living through another trauma with the abuse she was receiving. After all the work and the therapy that she did, Ellie Jean was yet again subject to a torrent of abuse, this time online. That is why controlling her own narrative is so important to Ellie Jean, especially after everything that she endured. The effects of long term abuse certainly leaves a lasting scar of psychological trauma, which was confounded by online bullying, fueled by misinformation. A moment which should have been private was captured from another angle and presented in a such a way as to cause maximum outrage.
